How much does it matter? Exploring the role of parental variables in school deviance in Romania
Marici, M. & Turliuc, M. N. Pages 9-3Author(s): Maria-Nicoleta Turliuc, Marius Marici
Language: English
Subject(s): Psychology
Issue: 1/XIX/2011
Page Range: 9-33
No. of Pages: 25
Keywords: adolescents; parental variables; school deviance
Summary/Abstract: In the present study, we explored the role of mothers and fathers in adolescents’ school deviance. We were interested in the connection between parental variables manifested within the home, such as support, monitoring, punitive discipline, attitude towards deviance, time spent with children, and their impact on adolescents’ deviance at school. We used self-reported data from 317 adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years (m = 17.9, SD = 0.9) from Suceava, Romania. Using independent t-tests, we found that girls are more parented than boys, the later are almost twice as deviant than girls, and mothers seem to invest more parenting resources in children compared with fathers. Using multiple hierarchical regressions, we found evidence that punitive discipline and attitude towards deviance are the strongest predictors of deviance. Monitoring explains deviance only with respect to girls, while time parents spent together explains deviance only with respect to boys.

A longitudinal approach of the students’ learning strategies and styles
Roman, D., Bonchiş, B., & Coturbaş, L. Pages 34-51Author(s): Elena Bonchiş, Daniela Roman, Lioara Coturbaş
Language: English
Subject(s): Psychology
Issue: 1/XIX/2011
Page Range: 34-51
No. of Pages: 18
Keywords: learning strategies and styles; in-depth approach and surface approach of learning; longitudinal study
Summary/Abstract: Starting from the results of the studies developed by different authors, the study aims at depicting the dynamics of learning strategies and styles; more precisely, the identification of the modifications which appear in the students’ utilization of learning strategies and styles during the university years, assuming that they will develop learning strategies and styles directed towards understanding. Our research focused on these aspects, based on the data from 80 participants (men and women), students of the University of Oradea, Psychology program of study. Thus, ILS was applied in three moments: moment 1 represents the testing of the students in the first year of study (120), moment 2 (80) represents the testing in the second year of study and moment 3 (43) represents the testing in the third year of study. The obtained data confirm the formulated hypothesis. Senior students progress in what concerns learning by using learning strategies which differ through content and significance from the same students in the first year. However, we could notice that there are aspects resistant to change. The proposed explanations concern both aspects related to development but also contextual influences.

Dimensions of stress among air traffic controllers
Maier, R. Pages 52-62Author(s): Roxana Maier
Language: English
Subject(s): Psychology
Issue: 1/XIX/2011
Page Range: 52-62
No. of Pages: 10
Keywords: stress; coping; air traffic controller
Summary/Abstract: Within the organizations focused on security maintenance, as it is the case of flight control, the human factor and its relation with stress has an utmost importance in order to avoid accidents or even critical incidents. It is possible to devise numerous stress management programs on the basis of the studies on the dimensions of stress and on the comparison with other occupations. The study presents data referring to different aspects of stress - stress perception, coping methods, life events - by making a comparison between four distinct professional categories: air traffic controller, operator within a radioactive environment, professors and doctors. The results point out that even though the occupation of air traffic controller is extremely stressful, the perceived stress level is low and the coping methods are mainly active. In conclusion, by taking into consideration the specific aspect of the occupation (shift working), we propose coaching programs for a more efficient stress management.

Summary/Abstract: Recidivism refers to the act of reoffending by any person who has been arrested, convicted and incarcerated for a criminal activity. Recidivism may be general (a criminal activity of any kind) or sexual (a criminal activity of sexual nature). The literature contains a number of controversies regarding sexual offenders, some authors sustain that these delinquents are specialized in this type of crime while others affirm that most criminal acts committed by these perpetrators are of non sexual nature. In the present paper we present in a unitary manner the conclusions of a series of studies regarding the rate of recidivism of sexual offenses. These studies were identified by using as keywords “sexual offenders” and “recidivism” in the Ebsco and Proquest databases.

Keywords: ethical decision-making; casuistry; principlism
Summary/Abstract: Given the situation in Romania, where the field of the moral expertise and of the application of the ethical decision methods in psychology is hardly at the beginning, in the conditions where the practice imposes the use of moral deliberation tools, we chose to present in this text only those methods (the casuistic method, the principlism method) which are placed at a certain distance from the philosophical controversies related to the application of the theories; these methods should be successfully applied by the psychology practitioners – who do not have an expertise in the ethical theories, but which allows them to successfully solve the complicated situations and the ethical dilemmas in the developed actions.

Summary/Abstract: The famous Socratic phrase 'Know thyself' initiates the movement of the human’s reflection on the self and causes the opening towards' the thought which thinks himself' and towards searching and explaining the mechanisms through which the thought functions. Mental functions are structured, hierarchical and located inside the body for Plato. For Aristotle, mental functions are achieved by 'moving' the pneuma within the anatomical system. The cognitivism is Platonic since it builds schemes and moves within them. In modern terms, he is concerned with the software.
